‘Neverending manuscript’ lab
❖ Created in the frame of the initiative ‘On the trail of the neverending manuscript’ with funding from the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’ (2022–2024), and now expanded in the frame of the TabulaRasa project ❖
What if a manuscript never truly ends? In the Neverending manuscript lab, researchers and participants explore exactly that question – how texts are created, erased, re‑used and rewritten across time and media. The lab invites us to rethink writing not as a one‑time act of inscription, but as a dynamic process of transformation. From clay tablets and wax boards of the ancient world to erasable inks in later cultures, the lab investigates how rewritability has shaped the life of manuscripts offering a wide range of materials for the study and experimentation of erasing and rewriting practices: replicas of ancient manuscripts, writing supports such as papyri, parchments, and various kinds of clay and wax tablets, writing tools (styli, pens, brushes), primary ingredients for inks and waxes, relevant tools and kitchenware for the preparation of writing supports, and other materials for hands-on experiments and reconstructions.
