Lucia Consuelo Colella wins the Prix spécial de l’Institut de droit romain dell’Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas

Lucia Consuelo Colella, currently postdoctoral fellow within the TabulaRasa project, has been honoured with the Prix spécial de l’Institut de droit romain dell’Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas within the Gérard Boulvert International Roman Law Prize, under the patronage of the Italian Constitutional Court for her recent book “I testamenti dei cittadini romani d’Egitto tra storia sociale e prassi giuridica” (Philippika 178, Harrassowitz 2024), published as part of the ERC NOTAE Project,

The awarding committee described her research outstanding for its exceptional scholarly precision, rigorous methodology, and its significant contribution to the understanding of the economic, social, and legal dimensions of Roman Egypt.This prestigious acknowledgment highlights not only the depth of her research, but also the relevance of her work in shedding light on testamentary practices and everyday life in the Roman world, confirming the author’s capacity to interweave historical insight with meticulous legal analysis.

"The corpus under study consists of 26 wills preserved on wax tablets and papyri in both Latin and Greek. Among these are one previously unidentified testament and two unpublished documents concerning testamentary arrangements.The critical edition of these documents also takes into account paratextual and linguistic aspects, for the first time in some cases. The new information that emerges forms the basis for an analysis of the socio-economic profile and the language skills of the testators, beneficiaries and witnesses in relation to the groups of Roman citizens in Egypt for whom we have information from other sources, as well as reflections on the representativity of the papyrological sources with regard to the proportion of soldiers and veterans among Roman citizens in the province prior to the Constitutio Antoniniana"
